HeartBeat: Domainer Bots: The end of domaining as we know it?

Nov 27

Things change.

It’s the previous sentence that most humans have a difficult time accepting. They feel change is more palatable when the benefits don’t require a pivot in mindset or strategy. Unfortunately, this is especially true in the domain investing sector where many new and seasoned domainers embrace a static industry value-narrative. Impending change is often dismissed as a “trend”; and those domainers who are vocal about innovative possibilities often face ridicule. Now, this isn’t to cast a negative light on the domain industry; but it’s to highlight the existing culture. A culture that’ll soon be upended by ‘domainer bots’.

So, in the domain space there’s often use of the word “speculation”. More often than not, it’s the go-to rebuttal for domainers who don’t want to acknowledge cues of certainty. One thing that can’t be deemed speculation is the fact domainer bots are here. They’re actively penetrating every branch of domaining; and their impact will be far-reaching. Especially in an industry that’s relatively close-knit in terms of its size. We’re already seeing domainer bots being used for data fetching/reporting, naming suggestions, website build-outs and more. All of which are things most human domainers didn’t do as efficiently or at all.

As time goes on, we’ll eventually see the emergence of domain buying, selling and trading experiences completely steered by bots. It doesn’t take much for an objective human domainer to see we’re not too far off from things like bot-run domain registrars and brokerages etc. It’ll be things like these that dilute the negative impact human bias, greed and industry politics have on the intrinsic value of domain names in general. As a result, domaining itself will become more inclusive and democratized on both the centralized and blockchain front. Some will write this off as “speculation”; but it’ll soon be an inescapable front-facing reality.

With everything covered, it’s worth addressing whether domainer bots signal the end of humandomainers. Will human domainers be rendered obsolete? The short answer is no. Granted, we’ll see many meet their domainer demise; but those who thrive will do so thanks to a constructive embrace of the future. The domain industry has pretty much been self-regulated up until now. This paved the way for a handful of players to make the space their sandbox. One where if you didn’t play by their rules, and bow to their king, you basically stood no chance of advancing. Well, Ai and bots are disrupting playtime; and there’s no speculation in that. Why?

Because THINGS ARE CHANGING.
